Biology Words: Breathing

Simple Description

Taking air in and out of the lungs

Further Detail

Living organisms need oxygen for respiration. Breathing is the process of taking oxygen into the body and breathing out the waste carbon dioxide. The human body breathes by flattening out the diaphragm at the bottom of the lungs, which causes an increase in volume of the chest cavity. Air is then brought into the cavity to take up the extra volume.
