Chemistry Words: Fractional distillation

Simple Description

A process used to separate crude oil into different fractions.

Further Detail

Fractions separated by the fractional distillation of crude oil have different boiling points. The crude oil is heated to vapourise it, the gases then rise up through the fractional distillation column until they condense. The shorter the chain length of the hydrocarbon the higher up the fractionating column it will travel.
