Chemistry Words: Impurities

Simple Description

Something added to a chemical to change its properties

Further Detail

For example, carbon impurities are added to iron to make it stronger. Pure iron is easy to bend as the layers of iron atoms slide other each other. When impurities are introduced (e.g. carbon,to make steel) the iron becomes harder because the layers can no longer slide over each other.
