An abbreviation to use when working out if a substance has been oxidised or reduced. If the substance loses is electrons then it has been oxidised whereas if it has gained electrons then it has been reduced. If both process happen in one reaction (e.g. the process of electrolysis) then the reaction is called a Redox (reduction-oxidation) reaction.
